Above ground facilities
The Southern Interchange includes buildings needed to operate NorthConnex. The community was able to participate in the design of these buildings during a consultation process for the Urban Design and Landscape Plan. The permanent buildings in this area include:
Motorway Control Centre
The centre will include a tunnel control room, training and incident response room, workshop, emergency vehicle depot, garage and on-site parking for workers and visitors. It will be staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, by about 30 people.
Southern Ventilation Facility
The ventilation outlet will be located on the north western corner of the Hills M2 Motorway/Pennant Hills Road interchange. During operation, the ventilation system will draw fresh air into the tunnel and emit air via the ventilation outlet. Air quality modelling predicts the ventilation outlet will have a negligible impact on local air quality. You can read more
about air quality and NorthConnex
here.
Maintenance yard
To ensure any traffic incidents within the tunnel are attended to immediately, a maintenance yard at the Southern Interchange will house tow trucks and other emergency response equipment.
A fact sheet is
available.

Getting in and out of the tunnel

- A westbound off ramp exiting directly onto the Hills M2 (west of the intersection with Pennant Hills Road)
- A northbound on ramp from Pennant Hills Road (north of the intersection with the Hills M2)
- A southbound off ramp onto Pennant Hills Road (north of the intersection with the Hills M2).
